The Superbowl, and the Answer to Society’s Problems

Author’s note: Sometimes my thoughts are inspired by current events. This makes it necessary to explain the context of the remarks when reprinting the article. This article was written following the first of three recent Dallas Cowboy victories in the Superbowl (January, 1993). I believe the message to be even more timely now.

Last week the city of Dallas had a parade and pep rally to celebrate the Super Bowl victory our Cowboys had two weeks ago. I watched the parade on television, and as soon as it was over I turned the television off. You have to understand that I am a big fan, and so when I turned off the television, I was in a very good mood. It was fun to see the fans and the players having such a good time.

Of course, you know what happened after the rally broke up. (A riot ensued). I wish I could say I was shocked by the fights and beatings which took place after the parade. With dismay I watched the videotape of the violence on the evening news. What should have been a day of joy and fun turned out to be another blemish on our society. As I said, I wish I could say I was surprised, but I am not. In fact, I had mentioned to several on the night of the Cowboy’s victory to watch out for violence during the ensuing celebration.

In the past several years there have been a number of examples of excess during victory celebrations. Lootings, shootings, knifings, burning of cars, fights, etc., have all been seen in the past several years.

I find that this is one manifestation of many which points out the profane state in which we find our society. You look at the breakdown of morals in our society which had led to such things as racial violence, drug abuse, promiscuity, abortion, homosexuality, the disease of AIDS, and all types of rebellion against authority, and you find an appalling trend.

The ridiculous thing about this mess is that nobody seems to know what to do about it. Some people want to throw money at the problem, and others want more education. Individuals come up with new “methods” and “programs” in an attempt to deal with increasing anarchy in our society. Christians have the answer, but when we try to explain what must be done, we are often riduculed, and never listened to.

Let me give you an example or two. We all know that AIDS is transmitted (among other methods) by sexual activity. We know that the way to remain AIDS free is to remain celibate until marriage, and then marry another virgin. That way, there is no way you can contract the AIDS virus. This revolutionary concept has a Biblical basis. For example, the Hebrew writer stated in chapter 13, verse 4, “Marriage {is} honorable among all, and the bed undefiled; but fornicators and adulterers God will judge.” Knowing this, we say to those who are looking for answers, “Teach the people to abstain, to marry, to remain faithful to their spouse, and the problem will go away.”

But the response is one of derision. “That’s no answer! Telling the people to abstain isn’t going to solve any problem! The people are going to be promiscuous anyway! We have to come up with some other answer!”

This is where the point must be made. Whether it is drug abuse, homosexuality, AIDS, abortion, promiscuity, bigotry, whatever, the answer is to return to the Biblical principles revealed by the Holy Spirit thousands of years ago. To do so will solve all of the seemingly unsolvable problems which society is beset with today. There are no other answers! You see, that is the problem. People refuse to believe that turning to Bible principles is the ONLY answer. It is, but no one in our society seems to be willing to accept it. When those solution seekers say that it isn’t the answer, what they really mean is that people are so rebellious that they won’t accept the answer. The solution remains. Just because people refuse to cease their rebellious activities does not mean that the answer is flawed. The flaw is in the people.

Mark my words. If the people of the United States persist in this rebellion, if they refuse to return to godly behavior, then our society is lost. They will continue down the same path of destruction that the pagans did, as recorded by Paul in Romans chapter one. Notice what he says in verses 22-25, “Professing to be wise, they became fools, and changed the glory of the incorruptible God into an image made like corruptible man – and birds and four footed beasts and creeping things. Therefore God also gave them up to uncleanness, in the lusts of their hearts, to dishonor their bodies among themselves, who exchanged the truth of God for the lie, and worshiped and served the creature rather than the Creator, who is blessed forever. Amen.”

The solution is there. It is simple. I can’t help it if no one seems to be willing to accept it!
