Same Facts … Different Interpretations

creation2I recently came across a very interesting and informative article written by Ken Ham on the Answers In Genesis website. The title of the article is, Creation: ‘where’s the proof”, and it can be found in its entirety at the following URL:

Consider the following quote from the article:

Creationists and evolutionists, Christians and non-Christians all have the same evidence—the same facts. Think about it: we all have the same earth, the same fossil layers, the same animals and plants, the same stars—the facts are all the same.

The difference is in the way we all interpret the facts. And why do we interpret facts differently? Because we start with different presuppositions. These are things that are assumed to be true, without being able to prove them. These then become the basis for other conclusions. All reasoning is based on presuppositions (also called axioms). This becomes especially relevant when dealing with past events.

The premise of the article is interesting. The writer notes that in arguing whether man was created or evolved, many want to “leave the Bible out of it.” In other words, they would be willing to listen to the claims of Christianity, but first they need to see real proof regarding God’s existence.

The problem is, the proof is there… it just has to be interpreted in the proper way. As the Psalmist wrote, “The heavens declare the glory of God; And the firmament shows His handiwork. Day unto day utters speech, And night unto night reveals knowledge. There is no speech nor language Where their voice is not heard. Their line has gone out through all the earth, And their words to the end of the world” (Psalm 19:1-4).

The apostle Paul indicated that the proof is so obvious that all should believe it. Those who will not condemn themselves. “For since the creation of the world His invisible attributes are clearly seen, being understood by the things that are made, even His eternal power and Godhead, so that they are without excuse, because, although they knew God, they did not glorify Him as God, nor were thankful, but became futile in their thoughts, and their foolish hearts were darkened. Professing to be wise, they became fools” (Romans 1:20-22).

Evolutionists will often tell you that they are willing to go wherever the evidence takes them. That may be so in theory, but in practice most are unwilling to accept the evidence if it takes them towards God!

It is a rejection of God that leads men to naturalistic explanations of origins. If a man says, “There is no God”, then he must explain this ordered and wonderful universe in another way. (Remember, if a man says there is no God, he is a fool!, cf. Psalm 53:1). Foolish men have come up with foolish and fanciful explanations of the origins of both themselves, and the universe that God has created.

Consider, for example, similarities in design. The fact that a monkey looks much like a man is attributed by evolutionists to a common ancestor. Creationists attribute the same to a common designer.

The same thing is true with all of the scientific and natural facts of our physical world. God is the Creator, and His creation, when put in the context of His revelation to man, makes good sense.

While an interpretation of the physical facts in light of revelation can be a powerful argument regarding His existence, and our need of Christ as Savior, it must be remembered that ultimately it is God’s word that brings salvation! “For the word of God is living and powerful, and sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing even to the division of soul and spirit, and of joints and marrow, and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart” (Hebrews 4:12).

Yes, we have a bias, but so does the evolutionist. The question is, “Whose interpretation of the facts is true?”
