First there was the LP sized Laser Disc, then the VHS—Beta battle (won by VHS). Now we have DVD’s, and already released HD DVD’s and Sony’s Blue Ray discs, that will be fighting a battle for supremacy for the next few years.
There were a number of reasons why VHS systems won out over Betamax (despite the Betamax tapes being slightly superior in technical quality). But, one of the primary reasons is that the pornographic distributors chose VHS. It seems that SONY (the manufacturer of Betamax) did not want its product to be associated with pornography, and so pornographers went with the alternative.
“Quite famously in the war between Betamax and VHS the latter won especially because the adult industry preferred it.” (Aaron McKenna, TGDaily.com)
If you can believe it, it is probable that the same thing will happen again.
“According to Heise Online and other news sites the adult industry may choose HD-DVD as their favorite format. Heise Online is reporting that Joone, founder of the company Digital Playground and of extremely popular HD adult movies, declared that his company would from next week on be publishing movies on HD DVD on a regular basis.” (Mihai Alexandru, Playfuls.com)
It is also interesting to note that SONY, maker of the Blu-ray disc, is again at least partially behind the decision of pornographers to use HD DVD. According to the report, pornographers initially preferred Blu-ray (again the technically superior product), but “all Blu-ray Disc copying facilities in the United States had refused to cooperate” (ibid). Kudos to SONY!
It is a sad commentary on our society that smut (euphemistically referred to as the “adult entertainment industry”) has such a profound influence. But, it has been estimated that the purveyors of such obscenity annually enjoy profits of approximately $12 billion.
Obviously, such ungodliness, sans repentance, will lead to the judgment of God being visited upon our nation. However, the more important lesson may be how this immorality can have an influence upon God’s people. It seems that the Christians in Corinth had been deleteriously affected by their fellow citizen’s ungodly tendencies (cf. 1 Corinthians 5) Paul, in exhorting them, told the church how it should be by noting their conversion, “And such were some of you. But you were washed, but you were sanctified, but you were justified in the name of the Lord Jesus and by the Spirit of our God” (1 Corinthians 6:11).
We have been made holy by God. Our lives as His children should remain unsullied both by pornography, and its lesser lewd and lascivious counterparts in the movies, on TV and in popular music. God calls the Christian to purity, a life lived by a higher standard than that recognized by those in the world. Anything else is inconsistent and incompatible with the Christian walk.
