Our Origin Story

The title of the first book of the Bible, Genesis, is a greek word meaning “origin” or “beginning.” Similarly, the Hebrew title is taken from the first phrase, “In the beginning.”

The book of Genesis gives us a glimpse of the origin of humanity. It has fallen into disrepute in the last couple of centuries as men have developed other ideas regarding our beginning. Science has adopted the theory of evolution to describe how we came about. Due to the scientific method of inquiry, the theory has limitations. Though it has been accepted as correct by a large part of the world’s population.
In contrast, faith in an Omnipotent Creator as an explanation for our existence has lost adherents over the years.

Here are a few things I would like for you to consider:

  • The scientific method relies upon the validation of hypotheses through repeated experimentation leading to consistent data. This is why the concept of evolution between kinds (a Biblical concept) has not been validated. It can’t be observed scientifically, as what is posited is to have taken place over millions of years.
  • The data that exists regarding both stellar evolution and the evolution of life can be described in light of a supernatural omnipotent being. The fact that this is not demonstrable by the scientific method, or that its origin is ancient, does not mean its not true. For the Christian, the belief that “God made it that way” is unacceptable to much of modern society. There is a bias regarding our own time. Progress in technology and scientific discoveries have made men arrogant, thinking we are brighter than those who have gone on before.
  • Scientific views of where, when and how life originated can’t be scientific. They are speculations based upon the theory of evolution itself. Science is limited in this way.

The Bible says, “In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth” (Genesis 1:1); and, “Then God said, ‘Let Us make man in Our image, according to Our likeness; let them have dominion over the fish of the sea, over the birds of the air, and over the cattle, over all the earth and over every creeping thing that creeps on the earth.’ So God created man in His own image; in the image of God He created him; male and female He created them” (Genesis 1:26-27).

There is a reason why this explanation has staying power, though some have rejected it. It is truth, and all you have to do is look at the universe to see the beautiful proof of design and that Designer! “The heavens declare the glory of God; and the firmament shows His handiwork.” (Psalms 19:1). Many choose science as their religion. We look at the evidence and know our God and Father to be from where we came!

In the Beginning

“In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth. The earth was without form, and void; and darkness was on the face of the deep. And the Spirit of God was hovering over the face of the waters” (Genesis 1:1-2). This was the initial state of God’s created universe.  A big question is asked by many — How much time passed between this statement by Moses in Genesis 1:1-2, and the word “Then” which begins the third verse. The answer is, nobody knows. It has not been revealed.

What we do know is that the week of creation described by Moses in verses 3-31 was described by Jesus as being part of the beginning. Jesus said in Matthew 19, “And He answered and said to them, ‘Have you not read that He who made them at the beginning made them male and female,’” (4). The idea that billions of years passed between verse 2 and verse 3 does not jibe with Jesus’ words. However, a relatively short time, whatever it might be, does no damage to Jesus’ claim that God instituted marriage at the beginning of His creation. Continue reading “In the Beginning”

“He is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn over all creation. For by Him all things were created that are in heaven and that are on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or dominions or principalities or powers. All things were created through Him and for Him” (Colossians 1:16-17).

The Bible affirms truth in several places. Another is John 1:1-3. “All things were made through Him, and without Him nothing was made that was made” (3).

It reminds me of the old joke about the scientist, who claimed he could create life, just like God.  So, he got all prepared, and reached down for some dirt.  God said to him, “Get your own dirt!”

God alone is our Creator.  The scripture reveals that God the Son spoke our universe, every bit of it, into existence.  In this was He was the “firstborn over all creation.” This doesn’t mean that He was the first one created, but He is the one from which all creation springs. “And without Him nothing was made that was made.”

Our Savior is not merely a man among other men. He is as far removed from others as we are to an ant. Even farther removed. Jesus is the Son of God. “And the Word became flesh and dwelt among us, and we beheld His glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father, full of grace and truth” (John 1:14).

Viewing the Planets

Several weeks ago I made a bit of a big thing with the grandkids, showing them Venus and Jupiter in the western sky. Sawyer and I actually went on the roof to use her telescope (didn’t work, too windy), but they got a kick out of seeing and identifying the planets.

A week from Tuesday, I have read, there will actually be five planets that will be viewable shortly after sunset in the western sky (at least if you have a flat horizon and are away from city lights, and maybe have binoculars). Mercury, Venus, Jupiter, Mars and Uranus will all be visible. How do we know that? Well, because of the predictable nature of the planets orbits, combined with a healthy knowledge of physics and higher math. (That means I have no idea where they will be, but others have figured it out and told me). Continue reading “Viewing the Planets”

Sermon: Believers in Creation

Both the creation itself and the inspired word of God reveal that the universe was created by the Almighty in six days. We address several individuals in the New Testament who made that affirmation, including Jesus Himself.

Saturday Night: The Majesty of God

A lesson designed to enourage respect, awe and acknowledgment of God’s power and majesty as our Creator.

Sunday 9AM: The Spiritual Man

The lesson contrasts the carnal man with the spiritual man, teaching us how to live so as to please God always.

Sunday 10AM: Grace Came Teaching

A discussion of Paul’s declaration in Titus 2:11-12, “For the grace of God that brings salvation has appeared to all men, teaching us that, denying ungodliness and worldly lusts, we should live soberly, righteously, and godly in the present age.”

Sunday 11AM: The Man of God

A discussion of the text of 1 Timothy 6:11-14, and the phrase “the man of God.” The text describes both what such a man flees, and what he pursues.

Monday Night: God Rules in the Kingdoms of Men

In this lesson, God’s interaction with His people, and the nations used to chastise them is discussed. In this we see God’s plan, and His control over all the nations.

Tuesday Night: Challenges in the First Century Church

In the first century, congregations of God’s people were challenged in similar ways as we are today. Sin, persecution at the hand of secular leaders, and inward apathy.

Wednesday Night: Challenges for Every Generation

The lesson shows how, like the Christians of the first century, every generation of God’s children will be challenged by dangers from both within and wihtout.

Thursday Night: What Does the Future Hold?

When the question is asked, the correct answer is, “It depends!” It depends upon the individual, and their response to God’s will.

Sermon: Can Evolution Be True?

Can Evolution Be True

The universe, the world, and all life in it has been created by the Almighty God of heaven. The theory of evolution can not account for design in the universe, and is not true.

Big Bang Theory Debunked

big bang

I just finished reading an article titled, “We now know the big bang theory is (probably) not how the universe began.” It was written by Ethan Siegle, who is a Ph.D. astrophysicist, and the author of the book “Starts with a Bang.” The article seeks to show that the idea of the universe having its origin with a big bang, expanding from a a state of “infinitesimal sizes and infinite densities and temperatures”, is not a valid explanation for the beginning of the universe.

The big bang theory has been used for decades as the explanation for the existence of the universe as we observe it today. It has had almost universal acceptance among naturalists, as it has been the most effective naturalistic explanation for things being the way they are.

Sermon: “When I consider Your heavens”

When I Consider Your Heavens

David’s contemplation of the night sky seems to have been the inspiration for Psalm 8. The Psalm shows that God is worthy of praise, both for His creative work, and his patronage of man.

Sermon: The Bible Doctrine of Creation

The Bible Doctrine of Creation

The Lesson is a positive affirmation and examination of what the Bible teaches regarding the beginning of the universe, and life on earth.

Sermon: “Open my eyes, that I may see…”

Image

In Psalm 119:18, the writer prays to God for discernment regarding the wonderful things contained in His law. Such discernment (the opening of our eyes) is needed, and worthy of our petitions to God.

In the News: Consciousness & God

ImageA common question in science and common theme of science fiction is the potential of robots to become sufficiently complex to become conscious. That is, have self-awareness. In a sense, it would mean that they are alive, would have self-will, and (as happens often in Sci-Fi novels and shows) perhaps would rise up in revolt against mankind (cf. Terminator, among others). Like I said, science fiction.

There is a theory out there about how the brain works, called Quantum Brain Dynamics (it’s a real theory). It states that our brains not only give us the ability to hear, see, taste, feel, etc., — our brains also use quantum mechanics to create consciousness in us.

Fellowship and the “Days” of Genesis

creationIt is interesting, and rather disheartening to note that brethren can quickly become complacent with regard to false doctrine. Typically, when a false doctrine is introduced, it is dealt with by those who uphold the truth, sides are taken, and the issue fades. Unfortunately, those who hold to the error are seldom fully expelled from fellowship with God’s people. This was the case with Israel, which failed as a nation to eradicate idolatry. As such, the worship of foreign gods was a constant sin of the nation throughout its history. It seems that we have not learned from history. In this generation, God’s people continue to fellowship those who bring error into the camp. As Paul wrote, “For the time will come when they will not endure sound doctrine, but according to their own desires, because they have itching ears, they will heap up for themselves teachers; and they will turn their ears away from the truth, and be turned aside to fables” (2 Timothy 4:3-4).

In the News: Drunken Robots

Image Last month, the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) held its annual Robotics challenge. The main competition was a testing of android like robots in skills such as walking across uneven surfaces, opening doors, turning knobs, and flipping switches.
There is a youtube video that is making the rounds, showing the robots failing miserably at the assigned tasks. Type in this URL: http://tinyurl.com/p563vz6 to see the video.

Now, to be fair, some of the robots probably did a good job, but it is interesting to note just how difficult it is to get these kinds of robots to perform successfully the simplest of tasks. This, despite amazing technological advances that have been made.

The Creation of Man

Redemption The Bible begins with the words, “In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth. The earth was without form and void; and darkness was on the face of the deep. And the Spirit of God was hovering over the face of the waters” (Genesis 1:1).

It is important to note that these words, penned by Moses, ultimately have their origin with the Holy Spirit. This is the account of the beginning of the universe, given by the Creator Himself. Men may claim that physical evidences trump the Genesis account, but this is mere perception. If the evidence seems to contradict this historical narrative, then the interpretation of the data is in error. There are many scientists who can and do successfully put data derived from astronomy, geology, physics, etc., within the construct of the supernatural creative acts described in the Genesis account. “…Indeed, let God be true but every man a liar” (Romans 3:4).
