God chose to save the world through the gospel, the truth concerning the advent, life, death, resurrection and ascension of Jesus to the right hand of the Father reigning on His throne. When we hear that gospel, our actions or lack thereof will determine whether we are saved . What must we do?

Mining the Scriptures: James 1:19-20
Our text begins a section that emphasizes the proper response to God’s grace. We are brought forth by the word of truth, How do we respond?
We listen to God’s word, “swift to hear”! Listening rather than talking is a good response in just about every situation. It is especially important when considering the source of information is God Himself. We exercise care in our speech, “slow to speak.” In James 3:1-12, the writer shows the danger to be found in the use of the tongue. This is especially so when words are uttered from anger “slow to wrath.”
Our purpose in life is to express the wisdom we receive from God in our own words and actions. Wrath precludes this. It takes discipline on our part. One who is “slow” is one who has control over his words and actions. It is contrasted with being “swift” to hear God. Used only here, the word swift shows a man who does not hesitate to listen to and apply God’s word in his life.

The Patternists: Building on the Sand
My grandson (2 years old) loves to have his Granna sing the wise man/foolish man song to him. Lately, each time he visits he goes directly to the giant LEGO blocks we have for the grandkids to play with, to get Granna to build a “house” for him to demolish when she gets to the words, “And the foolish man’s house went, SPLAT!” (Giggle, giggle, then do it all again).
Jesus’ words in Matthew 7:24-27, paraphrased in the song, teach significant truths that both children and adults need to learn. Consider what Jesus said:
“Therefore whoever hears these sayings of Mine, and does them, I will liken him to a wise man who built his house on the rock: 25 and the rain descended, the floods came, and the winds blew and beat on that house; and it did not fall, for it was founded on the rock. 26 But everyone who hears these sayings of Mine, and does not do them, will be like a foolish man who built his house on the sand: 27 and the rain descended, the floods came, and the winds blew and beat on that house; and it fell. And great was its fall.”

In John 6:60-71, we are told that many who heard Jesus’ teaching, because it was “hard”, turned away and followed Him no more. From this we can learn to differentiate from true disciples, and those who are not.
Sermon: The “Plan” of Salvation?
The idea that there are things a man must do to be saved, some people contend to be a product of the legalistic theology of the 19th century. This lesson is a defense of the what the scriptures teach regarding the salvation of man.
The Patternists: “They hear your words”
Ezekiel 33 records an attitude toward the word of God that existed in that time, and in ours as well. The text verses 30-33) relate God’s words to the prophet regarding the reception of his message by the people.
“…they speak to one another, everyone saying to his brother, ‘Please come and hear what the word is that comes from the Lord.’ So they come to you as people do, they sit before you as My people, and they hear your words, but they do not do them; for with their mouth they show much love, but their hearts pursue their own gain. Indeed you are to them as a very lovely song of one who has a pleasant voice and can play well on an instrument; for they hear your words, but they do not do them” (30-32).
Back in 1871, Robert Jamieson, A. R. Fausset and David Brown published a commentary on Ezekiel, where they attributed the following quote regarding this text to Jerome (4th century), “They praise thy eloquence, but care not for the subject of it as a real and personal thing; just as many do in the modern church.”
In Ezekiel’s day; in Jerome’s day; in the 19th century; in the 21st century; indeed in every age, among every people, there is the tendency to give lip service to God’s word.
“Oh, how beautiful it is, how soothing, how wonderful. It’s beautiful music to our ears.”
“…For they hear your words, but do not do them.”
How about you. Do you hear God’s words? Do you recognize how important it is to submit to Him? Do you obey God’s will for you?

The Patternists: Are You Listening?
The incarnate Creator of the universe has spoken to you, are you listening?
“And the Word became flesh and dwelt among us, and we beheld His glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father, full of grace and truth” (John 1:14).
“If you love Me, keep My commandments” (John 14:15).
- He said that divorce was sinful, are you listening? (cf. Matthew 19:9).
- He said that evil thoughts, sex outside of marriage, theft and lying are all sinful too, are you listening? (cf. Matthew 15:19).
- He said to be a good influence, are you listening? (cf. Matthew 5:16).
- He said to love your enemies, are you listening? (cf. Matthew 5:44).
He said, “Seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness” (Matthew 6:33), are you listening?
He said, “He who rejects Me, and does not receive My words, has that which judges him — the word that I have spoken will judge him in the last day.” (John 12:48).
