I came across a rather peculiar story last Thursday, in the Fort Worth Star-Telegram. The title of the article, a short blurb from the Associated Press, Abortions based on fetus’s race barred.
The article states:
Gov. Jan Brewer has signed what is likely the first legislation in the nation to ban abortions over ethnicity.
The law makes it a Class 3 felony to knowingly perform or provide financing for an abortion sought because of the rae or sex of the fetus or a parent’s race. The maximum punishment is 3 1/2 years in prison.
This is one of the most bizarre stories I have read in a while. Of course, I am certainly in favor of banning abortions, for whatever reason, but for the life of me I can’t imagine the practicality of this law.
As I understand it, abortion is legal in these United States for just about any reason. However, the decision to abort or not is solely the decision of the mother. So… this law seems to indicate that if an anglo woman goes to an abortionist and says, “I had sexual relations with a black man. I am pregnant, and I don’t want a child that is 1/2 black, so I want you to give me an abortion.” The abortionist would by law have to refuse her. Or, even more absurd… She says, “I had sexual relations with a white man, and don’t want a child of my own race, so I want you to give me an abortion.” The abortionist would again be precluded from taking part. Now, if the woman said that the baby would impact her mental health, cause stress in her life, or is an unwanted byproduct of promiscuity, the abortionist would be within his legal rights to abort the child, but not if race is mentioned.
Does anyone else see the silliness of this? If abortion is not the taking of a human life, then why would it be wrong to do it on the basis of race, gender or for any other reason? Can you imagine a man going to his doctor and saying, I want my appendix out because I don’t want a male appendix in my body — and it being illegal for the doctor to remove his appendix for that reason?
Consider as well the fact that if a fetus can be typed as a particular race or gender that this is evidence the fetus is a human being! In effect the law is giving permission to kill an unborn human child (not just a fetus), … except if the race of gender of that child does not suit you. Idiocy abounds in our society!
Either the fetus is a living human, and abortion should be outlawed for all reasons, or the fetus is not human, and such restrictions are absurd. Which is it? The Bible says the first:
“If men fight, and hurt a woman with child, so that she gives birth prematurely, yet no harm follows, he shall surely be punished accordingly as the woman’s husband imposes on him; and he shall pay as the judges determine. But if any harm follows, then you shall give life for life, eye for eye, tooth for tooth, hand for hand, foot for foot, burn for burn, wound for wound, stripe for stripe.” (Exodus 21:22-25).
The unborn child is human, and must be protected. It is both logical and scriptural!
