The United Church of Canada has been in the news of late, as the institution is trying to figure out what to do with one of its pastors. Gretta Vosper was ordained by that church in 1993. She has been, for a number of years, an avowed atheist! She has declared that it is time for the Christian church to give up on “the idolatry of a theistic god.” While some in the denomination wish for her to remain a pastor, others are not so sure. I wonder if anyone ever thought to consult the Bible to find out what God thinks?
“The fool has said in his heart, ‘There is no God.’ They are corrupt, they have done abominable works, there is none who does good” (Psalm 14:1).
Similar questions are being asked regarding the fellowship of others. For example, denominations all over the world are asking whether individuals who are guilty of sexual sins such as homosexuality, adultery, or premarital sex, should be considered righteous, and worthy of Christian fellowship. Seldom is God consulted as they seek to answer these questions.
“In the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, when you are gathered together, along with my spirit, with the power of our Lord Jesus Christ, deliver such a one to Satan for the destruction of the flesh, that his spirit may be saved in the day of the Lord Jesus” (1 Corinthians 5:4-5).
God’s will should impact every aspect of our lives here on earth. And yet, seldom do people even consider asking, “What does God think?”
-
Should I pay my taxes? “Render therefore to Caesar the things that are Caesar’s, and to God the things that are God’s” (Matthew 22:21).
-
Is it OK to live together instead of getting married? “Marriage is honorable among all, and the bed undefiled; but fornicators and adulterers God will judge” (Hebrews 13:4).
-
When the boss is out of the office, can I goof off? “And whatever you do, do it heartily, as to the Lord and not to men” (Colossians 3:23).
-
Is there really anything wrong with a little, white lie? “But the cowardly, unbelieving, abominable, murderers, sexually immoral, sorcerers, idolaters, and all liars shall have their part in the lake which burns with fire and brimstone, which is the second death” (Revelation 21:8).
-
I believe in Jesus, what do I need to do to be saved? “Repent, and let every one of you be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins” (Acts 2:38).
So often men think differently than God thinks! Why is that? “‘For My thoughts are not your thoughts, nor are your ways My ways,’ says the Lord. ‘For as the heavens are higher than the earth, so are My ways higher than your ways, and My thoughts than your thoughts'” (Isaiah 55:8-9).
So, next time before you act on what you think, maybe it would be a good idea to first find out what God thinks…Don’t you think?
