COVID-19 (6) Continue Earnestly in Prayer

Prayer2

Paul requested prayers from his brethren in Colosse, writing to them, “Continue earnestly in prayer, being vigilant in it with thanksgiving; meanwhile praying also for us, that God would open to us a door for the word, to speak the mystery of Christ, for which I am also in chains, that I may make it manifest, as I ought to speak” (4:2-4).

It is interesting that during times of physical distress, prayers are encouraged. It is right for us to do this. “Is anyone among you sick? Let him call for the elders of the church, and let them prayer over him, anointing him with oil in the name of the Lord” (James 5:14).

We chafe at our forced isolation, wondering how to fill our time. May I suggest making a special effort to spend time in prayer to God? Paul’s exhortation here was not for the Colossians to do something special, but to continue with diligence their habit as Christians. Prayer is important. It is especially important now! Pray for an end to the pandemic. Pray for physical healing for those stricken with the virus. Pray for the protection and health of your friends, family and brethren.

Did you notice Paul mentioned he was in chains? It is interesting that he did not place any emphasis on their praying for his release or physical safety. It may be that he presumed they would, but more probably it was not of great concern to him. What he asked for was their petition, on his behalf, that opportunities would be given for him to preach. To pray that Paul would continue to proclaim the word, even in prison, as was his duty for his Lord.

When you pray, don’t be preoccupied with the physical needs and requests that seem preeminent in times of distress. Be sure to give spiritual considerations their proper place in your prayers to God. Pray for souls to be saved. Pray for the strength of brethren. Pray for the spiritual welfare of your family. Pray for our church.

Whatever you do,“Continue earnestly in prayer, being vigilant in it with thanksgiving.”
