During times of national and global distress, Psalm 46 is the believer’s friend. The Psalmist wrote:
“God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble. Therefore we will not fear, even though the earth be removed, and though the mountains be carried into the midst of the sea; though its waters roar and be troubled, though the mountains shake with its swelling” (1-3).
Those who place their trust in God have no need to fear, no matter the dangers that lurk. Surely what we are suffering through today does not compare to the removal of the earth or the casting of the mountains into the sea? God’s helps those who are His. We can trust Him.
“There is a river whose streams shall make glad the city of God, the holy place of the tabernacle of the Most High. God is in the midst of her, she shall not be moved; God shall help her, just at the break of dawn. The nations raged, the kingdoms were moved; He uttered His voice, the earth melted. The Lord of hosts is with us; the God of Jacob is our refuge” (4-7).
Consider the power of the Almighty. At his voice, the earth melts! It does not matter if the whole world rages against our faith in God. His power makes sure our standing with Him. We trust in our ultimate victory against the agents of evil!
“Come, behold the works of the Lord, Who has made desolations in the earth. He makes wars cease to the end of the earth; He breaks the bow and cuts the spear in two; He burns the chariot in the fire. Be still, and know that I am God; I will be exalted among the nations, I will be exalted in the earth! The Lord of hosts is with us; the God of Jacob is our refuge” (8-11).
The proof of God’s power and preeminence is ample. From the very beginning His “invisible attributes are clearly seen, being understood by the things that are made, even His eternal power and Godhead” (Romans 1:20). God has long been seen in the affairs of men, molding time and circumstance to His own will. With the evidence so readily available, we understand we have no need for concern.
God is our refuge and strength. With the power and mercy He supplies, we have help today and always. Praise God!
