A couple of days ago I watched a discussion regarding the ongoing protests in America. The premise was the seeming desire of protestors to abolish the institutions and way of life that has characterized America from the beginning.
As a response to the part that racism plays in the conflict, the host of the program (a news anchor) referred to the Declaration of Independence. She said that the declaration clearly states that “nature has created all of us as equals.”
While differences may exist as to what the forefathers intended by the phrase, “all men are created equal”, I found it disturbing that the host (a conservative) stated that the Declaration stated that nature had done the creating! Nature creates nothing. Nature is the product of the Creator!
Consider these words from the Declaration of Independence:
-
“…the separate and equal station to which the Laws of Nature and of Nature’s God entitle them…” (paragraph 1).
-
“…that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights.” (paragraph 2).
-
“…appealing to the Supreme Judge of the world for the rectitude of our intentions…” (final paragraph).
-
“…with a firm reliance on the protection of divine Providence…” (final paragraph).
What is abundantly clear in the declaration is that the founding fathers had reference to Almighty God, not nature. And, in so doing made their appeal as an independent nation upon the rights that God had granted them. The rights to “Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness.”
Our society has forgotten God. No matter the political party in power, our country is now secular, agnostic, with forces that do not align with the Christian faith. It seems that even those leaders who proclaim faith in the God of heaven have for the most part severely compromised truth for expediency in their rule over our nation. We are truly strangers and pilgrims in this land.
“Therefore God also gave them up to uncleanness, in the lusts of their hearts, to dishonor their bodies among themselves, who exchanged the truth of God for the lie, and worshiped and served the creature rather than the creator, who is blessed forever. Amen” (Romans 1:24-25).
