Philippians 2:5-11 contains the ultimate example of God’s reward offered to the humble, in the person of His own Son. It is a strong example of a paradox. What seems to be counter to reason is shown to be God’s way in the text, both for Jesus, and for us as well.
“Let this mind be in you which was also in Christ Jesus, who, being in the form of God, did not consider it robbery to be equal with God, but made Himself of no reputation, taking the form of a bondservant, and coming in the likeness of men. And being found in appearance as a man, He humbled Himself and became obedient to the point of death, even the death of the cross. Therefore God also has highly exalted Him and given Him the name which is above every name, that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, of those in heaven, and of those on earth, and of those under the earth, and that every tongue should confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father” (Philippians 2:5-11).
Note the instruction, “Let this mind be in you which was also in Christ Jesus” (5). God has always blessed the humble, while men have a tendency to reward pride and arrogance. “Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven… Blessed are the meek, for they shall inherit the earth” (Matthew 5:3,5). Also, “But He gives more grace. Therefore He says: ‘God resists the proud, but gives grace to the humble’” (James 4:6, cf. Proverbs 3:34; 1 Peter 5:5).
The examples are numerous in scripture. Abraham, Moses, Daniel and David are all examples to which we could turn to illustrate this truth. Of course, as seen in our text, Jesus is the ultimate example. Can you imagine a Divine Being who in the beginning was “with God” and “was God” (cf. John 1:1), willingly choosing to come to earth and live and die as a man, suffering all of the trials and indignities of humanity?
So, Jesus serves as our example. He told the disciples after washing their feet (a menial and servile task), “If I then, your Lord and Teacher, have washed your feet, you also ought to wash one another’s feet. For I have given you an example, that you should do as I have done to you. Most assuredly, I say to you, a servant is not greater than his master; nor is he who is sent greater than he who sent him. If you know these things, blessed are you if you do them” (John 13:14-17).
Are you too proud? Most in the world are… it is considered a virtue by man. Instead humble yourself before God and man, and let Him do the exalting!
