Sermon: How to Know You Are Spiritually Dying
Spring Meeting 2014: Kyle Campbell
Five signs are discusses that indicate you are spiritually dying…
- You have left your first love.
- The story of the Cross no longer moves you.
- You don’t actively participate in the church’s work.
- You have no interest in saving souls.
- Worldliness is more attractive to you than spirituality.
Invitation: Complacency
Invitation delivered by: Josh Cox
It takes time and effort to be a mature and faithful Christian. Complacency or apathy is the enemy of the Christian. cf. Ephesians 4:11-16.
Sermon: Desensitized!
Sermon: Defeatism
In this sermon by Bob Ward, Bob discusses the defeatist attitude which can harmfully effect the Christian’s life and profession of faith.
Sermon: Apathy to Zeal
The terms apathy and zeal are defined, and examples are given of each in scripture. God’s response is also noted, as exhortations are given for Christians to exhibit fervor for God and His work.
Sermon: Two Cons
Sermon 4 of 9
Gospel Meeting May 5-10, 2012
Speaker: Chip Foster
Two concepts are examined, using Jeroboam as an example (1 Kings 12:25-30). The first, CONvenience. The second, CONviction. Good application is made to Christians in our time.
Sermon: Dangers Facing the Church
This sermon was adapted from an old bedsheet sermon chart created by Steve Hudgins years ago. The sermon was preached in two parts, AM and PM. I combined the two into a single recording of about 83 minutes. The sermon discusses 9 dangers facing the church: Ignorance, Neglectfulness, Worldliness, Boastfulness, Compromise, Materialism, Indifference, Doctrinal Error and Apostasy.
Invitation: That’s Just Sad
Invitation delivered by: Justin Carrell
Justin uses Hebrews 5:12-ff to point out the sadness of a Christian life that is marred by apathy. He uses this as a call to conviction and committment as the invitation is offered.

Mining the Scriptures: Revelation 3:14-22
Revelation 3:14-22
Our Lord’s final letter to the seven churches in Asia was addressed to the Laodiceans. Laodicea was about 100 miles inland of Ephesus, just northwest of Colosse.
The city was a wealthy one, and apparently the church was as well. This letter is unique among the twelve, in that there is nothing positive said about the congregation.
Though rich materially, Jesus said that the church was, “wretched, miserable, poor, blind and naked.”
The sin of the Laodiceans was apathy, colorfully described as being “lukewarm.” Equally colorful is the response of the Lord, “because you are lukewarm … I will vomit you out of my mouth” (vs. 16).
The Lord rebuked the Laodiceans because He loved them. He loves us as well. Remember, apathy is unpalatable to Him. If we are going to stand acceptable in His sight, we must give ourselves wholly to His service. Nothing less will suffice.
Paul’s Example: A Zealous Life
One of the most admirable qualities of the apostle Paul was his zeal. That zeal was present before he became a Christian, and in fact was partly responsible for his destructive work as a persecutor of God’s people. Paul said as much in Galatians 1:14, “And I advanced in Judaism beyond many of my contemporaries in my own nation, being more exceedingly zealous for the traditions of my fathers.”
We readily accede to the fact that zeal alone is insufficient to ensure admirable action. In fact, Paul admonished the Jews despite their zeal. He said, “For I bear them witness that they have a zeal for God, but not according to knowledge. For they being ignorant of God’s righteousness, and seeking to establish their own righteousness, have not submitted to the righteousness of God” (Romans 10:2-3).
From the Preacher’s Pen: It’s Cold Outside
It got cold outside this past week! I got an email from a preacher friend in Edna, TX (down south), who told me they got between 1” and 2” of snow a couple of days ago! Snow in south Texas?
The grass is going dormant, and the leaves have just about all given up the ghost, and it certainly is not my favorite time of the year! Oh well, knowing North Texas, it will probably be in the 70’s on Christmas day.
The cool weather reminded me of Revelation 3:15-16, “I know your works, that you are neither cold nor hot. I could wish that you were either cold or hot. So then, because you are lukewarm, and neither cold nor hot, I will vomit you out of my mouth.”
I’m not saying that our Lord likes the cold, but He at least prefers it to lukewarm Christians!

High Maintenance
Preachers sometimes compare notes about the congregations where they preach. I have noticed a term that several have used, (and I have used myself), to describe some Christians. The term is “high maintenance.”
Some cars are referred to as “high maintenance.” I came across a quote from a man who drove a Fiat. He said it stands for, Fix It All the Time. But, in his mind it was worth the headache to be able to drive a high performance machine. Of course, there are some jalopies that are high maintenance as well. Another word for these cars is “junk”, and they are hardly worth the effort to keep them running.
Some ladies are referred to as “high maintenance,” referring to the amount of attention they demand. They expect constant gifts and attention, and if they don’t get what they want their feelings are hurt or they lose interest. Used in this way, the term is certainly not a compliment. Nor is it normally a complement when a preacher refers to a Christian as “high maintenance.” However, it is not always a negative thing either.
Sermon: At Ease in Zion
Too many Christians are apathetic in their Christian walk. Rather than working diligently in our Lord’s service, they are “at ease in Zion” (cf. Amos 6:1)
