In The News: Can A Christian Be President

inthenewsThe question of our title is similar to other questions that have been asked. Can a Christian be a lawyer? Or, can a Christian tend bar?

Those questions speak of the morality of the two occupations. While I believe that a Christian could certainly practice law, there are certain types of lawyers who seem, if they do their job successfully, to violate Christian morality.

However, when I ask the question, “Can a Christian be President?” I am not so concerned with the ethics of the job; rather, I am referring to the electability of a Christian. I am convinced that one who truly holds to the teachings of Jesus Christ would be considered an extremist, and would have no chance of being elected to the highest office in America.

Sermon: The Name Christian

The name by which the people of God are known is Christian. It is the only proper name given to the disciples of our Lord in the entirety of scripture. And understanding of this important point is helpful in dealing with the denominational concept of Christianity, and teaching those caught in its web of error.

(Note: The audio is a bit under par, as the microphone battery was weak, and got weaker as the sermon progressed. It is, however, very intelligible).

What Is A Christian?

Luke records for us, in Acts 11;26, “And when he had found him, he brought him to Antioch. So it was that for a whole year they assembled with the church and taught a great many people. And the disciples were first called Christians in Antioch.”

It is interesting to note the prophecy found in Isaiah 62:2 with regard to Luke’s statement.

“The Gentiles shall see your righteousness, And all kings your glory. You shall be called by a new name, Which the mouth of the LORD will name.

Some would deny that the “calling” of the disciples as “Christians” was divinely ordained, but there seems to be no other name given to the disciples of our Lord. In fact, in all of the New Testament, the only proper name by which followers of Christ were known was Christian.
