Sermon: Plain Preaching

Jesus was plain in His preaching (cf. John 10:22-28), as were the apostles (cf. 2 Cor. 3:12). We should strive to be as well. The sermon describes 5 areas where plain speech is needed in teaching others:

  • How to be saved from sins
  • The Nature of the Church of Christ
  • Assembled worship is required of Christians
  • Christians are called to godly living
  • A Judgment is coming!

Sermon: Teaching the Plan of Salvation

While many believe the Bible to be difficult to understand, thus making their opinion (no matter how uniformed) as valid as any other, in reality the Bible is very simple and clear with regard to God’s plan of Salvation for man. The sermon covers a simple method of converting the sinner to Christ, using Acts 2 as a narrative.

A True Tragedy

(Many of you know that I write a weekly sports article for the River Oaks News. In the summer they let me write other kinds of articles. This one is to appear in the paper next week. They don’t let me write on religious topics, but sometimes I sneak in a spiritual value or two. I have a few other comments at the end of the article).

The news shows, magazines and internet have been humming recently with the news of the deaths of three well known entertainers.

Ed McMahon, sidekick to Johnny Carson, and host of Star Search lived to the age of 86. He died after a long battle with bone cancer, and a recent bout with pneumonia. His death, therefore, was not unexpected.

Farrah Fawcett, pinup girl and television star, died at the age of 62 after a long battle with cancer. Her death was long anticipated as well.

Class Series – 13 Questions

These are 13 actual questions asked by a Baptist church preacher. His name is David Martin, and he is referred to as the “Pastor” of the Solid Rock Baptist Church, in Bartlett, TN.

The questions appeared in an article written by Martin, entitled, “Common Sense Questions A ‘Church of Christ’ Preacher CANNOT Clearly Answer.” To view the article click here. (Note: This link only gets you to their home page. You will have to look for the article. The site uses frames, and does not allow for a direct link to the article).

While it is doubtful we could answer these questions to his satisfaction, these questions are similar to those commonly asked of us by those in the denominations.

We should “always be ready to give a defense to everyone who asks you a reason for the hope that is in you, with meekness and fear.” (1 Peter 3:15).

An examination of these questions will challenge us to study; and will doubtless increase our faith. The design of the series is to elicit discussion and encourage home study.

(Note:  We had some problems with our recording system during the series, and missed several lessons, so not all the audio is available.  We apologize for this).

Sermon: Why Few Will Reach Heaven

The scriptures teach that the way is strait and the gate narrow that leads to eternal life, and that few will be saved. This sermon seeks to answer why this is so.

Sermon: The Paradox of the Suffering Savior

Sermon Text: 2 Corinthians 4.

A seeming paradox of the Christian faith is seen in the fact that our Lord secured for us victory through his suffering and death on the cross. It is precisely because His enemies killed him that we can call ourselves “more than conquerors.”

Sermon: Jesus and the World

In his gospel, the apostle John uses the term world in various ways. The term world sometimes refers to the physical universe, sometimes humanity, and sometimes those who are hostile to Christ. The gospel reveals Christ’s relationship to each of the three.

Sermon: Salvation is On the Other Side of the Water

Using the examples of Noah and the flood, Israel at the Red Sea, and Naaman dipping in the Jordan, we establish that Salvation and cleansing come “through” the water. Application: Baptism is necessary for salvation.

Sermon: Divine Impartiality

Romans 2:11 states that there “is not partiality with God.” Because God is impartial and just, he has given everyone the right to hope. It follows that He requires the same with regard to the redemption of all men. God doesn’t play favorites. He “commands all men everywhere to repent.”
