Developing Intimacy With God
How would you characterize your relationship with God? Do you have the deist’s view of God?
de · ism: a movement or system of thought advocating natural religion based on human reason rather than revelation, emphasizing morality, and in the 18th century denying the interference of the Creator with the laws of the universe. (my emphasis, SC)
(Webster’s New Collegiate Dictionary)
Many people today advocate a deistic attitude toward God. In their way of thinking, God exists, and perhaps is responsible for our existence, but has no direct interaction with man. This allows us to believe what we want, do what we want, all without fearing any consequence from a deity which is, after all, far removed from and uninterested in the existence of His creation.
Resolution Realities
Sarah Thompson, 32, of Port Dickinson, a lecturer in health and physical education at Binghamton University, noted that she has “goals for the year, but most of them are quite mundane, actually — projects such as things I want to do around the house or a tangible change I can make to one of my classes.”
She said she views a New Year’s resolution as “setting a person up for behavioral change.”
The Christian Graces
The second epistle of Peter, chapter 1, lists a group of attributes which each Christian should seek to add to his character. In verses 5-7, Peter wrote, “But also for this very reason, giving all diligence, add to your faith virtue, to virtue knowledge, to knowledge self-control, to self-control perseverance, to perseverance godliness, to godliness brotherly kindness, and to brotherly kindness love.”
