Sermon: Unity and Diversity

In 1 Corinthians 12;12-ff, the apostle Paul indicates that we as Christians are diverse members of the one body. With Christ as head, we each do our part to edify the body as we give heed to Him.

It is important that a local church grow spiritually and numerically, but it is equally important that such growth be the byproduct of submitting to God’s will. Collectively and individually we have responsibilities we must fulfill as a precursor to growth.

In The News: LA Church to Pay $600 Million for Clergy Abuse

inthenewsLOS ANGELES – The Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Los Angeles will settle its clergy abuse cases for at least $600 million, by far the largest payout in the church’s sexual abuse scandal, The Associated Press learned Saturday.

Attorneys for the archdiocese and the plaintiffs are expected to announce the deal Monday, the day the first of more than 500 clergy abuse cases was scheduled for jury selection, according to two people with knowledge of the agreement. The sources spoke on condition of anonymity because the settlement had not been made public.

The archdiocese and its insurers will pay between $600 million and $650 million to about 500 plaintiffs — an average of $1.2 million to $1.3 million per person. The settlement also calls for the release of confidential priest personnel files after review by a judge assigned to oversee the litigation, the sources said.

The settlements would push the total amount paid out by the U.S. church since 1950 to more than $2 billion, with about a quarter of that coming from the Los Angeles archdiocese.

By GILLIAN FLACCUS, Associated Press Writer

Analysis:

The Catholic church has been embarrassed by this scandal, as alarmingly large numbers of Catholic priests, (each of which has taken a vow of celibacy), have been exposed as criminally promiscuous. Priests have been convicted of charges of sexual harassment, rape, and pedophilia (with both boys and girls).

Sermon: Saul of Tarsus, A Unique Case

The account of Saul’s conversion is unique in many ways because it involves not only his conversion, but also his appointment as an apostle. However, Saul had to do what all have to do in order to receive the forgiveness of his sins.

Sermon: God’s Second Law of Pardon

God requires that all men become obedient to the gospel of Christ, repenting of their sins, and being baptized for the remission of those sins. But what about the child of God who sins? What does God require of him to be reconciled? Acts 8 answers that question.

Seeking the Lord

In 1 Chronicles 28, King David called all of the leaders of Israel, (captains, stewards and men of valor), to himself, and explained to them that Solomon had been chosen by God to follow him on his throne, and to build the temple. He told them that God had promised to establish Solomon’s kingdom “forever”, “if he is steadfast to observe My judgments and My commandments, as it is this day” (vs. 7).

In verses 8-10, he first addressed the leaders of Israel, and then Solomon, enjoining them to seek God and His will. Notice the passage:

Now therefore, in the sight of all Israel, the assembly of the LORD, and in the hearing of our God, be careful to seek out all the commandments of the LORD your God, that you may possess this good land, and leave it as an inheritance for your children after you forever. 9 As for you, my son Solomon, know the God of your father, and serve Him with a loyal heart and with a willing mind; for the LORD searches all hearts and understands all the intent of the thoughts. If you seek Him, He will be found by you; but if you forsake Him, He will cast you off forever. 10 Consider now, for the LORD has chosen you to build a house for the sanctuary; be strong, and do it.

The phrase “be careful to seek out all the commandments of the Lord your God” is especially instructive to us.

In The News: Defending Vulgarity

inthenews

Sometimes I come across an “In the News” item in the course of a week just by reading news items on the internet or in the newspaper. Other weeks I search news services, typing in keywords that might bring up interesting matches.

This week I typed in the word vulgarity, thinking I might come across an article that would allow me to teach biblical principles of modesty or seasoned speech.

Interestingly, I came across a number of different articles from India, Pakistan, and even a couple of muslim countries, condemning vulgarity. Whether it be passionate kissing or off-color humor, vulgar practices are considered to be a societal problem in those countries.

Not so in America.
