Acts 17 describes two different responses to the gospel of Christ. The Bereans were noble in their fair minded reception of truth. The Athenians however, were largely undiscerning as they equated the truth with any other “new thing.”

To resolve to do something is to earnestly determine to accomplish it. In James 4:14-16, the concept of “resolving” is accompanied with the phrase “if the Lord wills.” If the Lord wills, we should resolve to: Be courageous, Serve the Lord, Not grow weary, Carefully follow Him, and Remember that He is watching. John 12 records the beginning of the final days of our Lord’s life. It also records the fickle nature of men. Men who initially received Him as the Son of David, worshipping Him upon his entry into Jerusalem – then later clamoring to kill Him on the cross.

The book of Ecclesiastes shows the wisdom to be found in listening to the preacher. The preacher is the man who studies and discerns God’s word, and has the capability to share that word with others. He is the one who has the answers to the important questions of life.

The Apostle Paul teaches in 1 Corinthians 3:1-11 that division of any type is an indication of a carnal man and unacceptable to God. We have been called to holiness, and such purity requires we work together in unity and love.

The title of the sermon is a reference to Paul’s statement in 1 Corinthians 8:1-3. Throughout the ages, an inappropriate attitude toward knowledge has led to arrogance and other sins. An appropriate attitude towards truth acknowledges its importance regarding the salvation of man, but that knowledge itself is not the end, but rather a means to obtaining that end, the salvation of the soul.
